The research team, including Joseph Ortiz, Ph.D., and Kuldeep Singh, Ph.D., of ӰƵ's Department of Earth Sciences, Sarah Eichler, Ph.D., of ӰƵ's Department of Biological Sciences; and the lead author, Lard, hypothesized that the combustion of chemicals like vinyl chloride in the presence of transition-metal oxides from the train, tracks and soil minerals, led to the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), including dioxins and furans.

Matar interned at Sherwin-Williams during her senior year at ӰƵ and signed on to a cooperative education program (co-op) after 12 weeks. She earned her degree in computer science in May 2024 and now works full-time at Sherwin-Williams as an advanced information technology (AIT) analyst and software developer
